U.S. LawShield
From Volatility to Velocity: Engineering an Acquisition Engine
Arm Candy transformed U.S. LawShield’s event-dependent growth model into a scalable, multichannel acquisition engine built for sustained momentum. The result: more than 100% growth in new members, with paid media driving 23% of all new-member acquisition and year-over-year membership growth accelerating to 18% at its peak.

U.S. LawShield was founded in 2009 by attorney Darren Rice with a mission to protect the constitutional rights of responsible firearm owners. Today, the organization provides members with affordable legal defense, including 24/7 access to independent attorneys and coverage of legal fees following a self-defense incident.

Commerce House is a Dallas-based advertising agency offering strategy, creative, digital, social, video, media, and analytics services.
The Challenge
Since its inception, U.S. LawShield had built its business primarily through in-person events such as gun shows and firearm training classes, where prospective members could be educated and enrolled face-to-face. While highly effective, this model was costly, geographically constrained, and vulnerable to seasonal fluctuations and event availability, limiting its ability to deliver consistent, scalable growth. As the organization looked to expand, it required a more resilient, multichannel acquisition strategy that could extend beyond events and support long-term membership growth.
The Strategy
Arm Candy and creative partner, Commerce House, collaborated closely to design and deploy a comprehensive, multichannel acquisition engine built to drive sustainable growth across both traditional and digital media environments.
Rather than relying on any single channel, the engagement focused on transforming the entire consumer journey, from brand awareness and consideration to conversion and retention. This included enhancements to the website experience, loyalty program, brand presence, physical and digital membership assets, and a fully integrated media investment strategy spanning both offline and online channels.
Strategically deployed flighted brand investments in partnership with customized full-funnel media mixes by product line across audiences were leveraged to maximize efficiency across brand and product specific investments to drive membership acquisition and classroom support.
Beyond foundational brand-building efforts, each product line was supported by a tailored full-funnel media strategy designed to balance precision audience targeting with scaled demand generation.Following the portfolio’s analysis, the media strategy evolved across three key dimensions:
The Execution
Executing the new acquisition strategy required solving two key challenges: measurement modernization and category complexity.
Modernizing Attribution & Measurement
Historically, U.S. LawShield relied on last-click attribution models that provided limited visibility into the impact of offline media and upper-funnel activity. As investment scaled across both traditional and digital channels, a more advanced measurement approach was required.
Arm Candy engineered a bespoke website data layer and standardized UTM framework to unify tracking across digital media, direct mail, broadcast, and event-driven acquisition. This system also resolved multi-member household attribution challenges, ensuring conversions were consistently and accurately mapped across devices and channels.
With this foundation in place, U.S. LawShield was able to transition from fragmented reporting to a unified view of cross-channel performance, including the utilization of sales team data captured via their internal reporting systems.
With a standardized data foundation established, an advanced analytics partner implemented a Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) framework to isolate the true incremental drivers of growth. The model analyzed 64 weeks of data across eight channels while controlling for external market variables, enabling a shift from reactive, last-click reporting to a predictive, incrementality-based decisioning system.
This allowed U.S. LawShield to understand not just what was converting, but what was truly driving net-new growth across both online and offline channels.
Navigating Category Complexity
The legal services and firearms categories require strict attention to compliance, regional regulations, and platform-specific restrictions, which vary significantly by state and channel.
To operate effectively within this environment, audience targeting, messaging, and media deployment were carefully adapted to ensure compliance while maintaining performance efficiency and scale.
